One Month Home

There were definitely times in the last six months where it felt like this adoption would never come to an end. Now, our lives together have really begun. Yoseph arrived home December 1st, 2011. He's kind of hard to catch for pictures or tries to attack the camera which makes it hard. But, that smile gets sweeter and bigger every day. He was home for Christmas (I really feared he wouldn't be) and this month will have his first birthday.
He's an amazing blessing to our lives. At least once a day I look at him in marvel remembering where he's come from. He's pretty small for his age, though he's gained a pound since coming home; he now weighs 16.5 lbs. Compared to American babies that's very small, but he seems to be very on par developmentally which was a bigger worry. Our first few weeks of adjustment were, as we expected, a little rough. One day it seemed Elijah was constantly grumpy and the next Yoseph was constantly grumpy. We were exhausted for the first about two weeks. We've all had to adjust, just like we would have if we had given birth to Yoseph. We had several nights of little sleep with Yoseph as he, I now think, would wake up and not remember where he was or expect it to be his nanny coming to comfort him not me. For the past two weeks he has slept through the night in his own room with very few wake ups. I won't say our adjustment is over by any means. Elijah is still learning how to treat a baby and be a big brother. He loves his brother tremendously but can be a little rambunctious sometimes which scares Yoseph a little.

Christmas was wonderful with my family visiting and meeting Yoseph for the first time. To have extra hands around to hold and entertain children was amazing. We got way too many toys and gifts (which is a blessing) which I am still trying to find where to put it all and cleanup from the company and, yes I still have one suitcase I haven't fully unpacked from Ethiopia.

At moments I'm very stressed and say to myself "no more kids, this is crazy enough already". The next moment I'll see them play nicely or give me a sweet hug and I'm on the web looking up adoption agencies again or ready to throw out that pack of birth control pills. We'll see how the Lord leads.
